Digitec Medical:
An image of excellence  in mammography

For the past 25 years, Digitec Medical has been setting the bar for excellence in the breast imaging equipment segment, with its unparalleled reputation for solid technical expertise and its enduring commitment to quality and superior customer service.

With the imaging segment gaining an even stronger foothold due to technological advancements and the subsequent surge in enhanced diagnostic capabilities, some might question why a medical imaging equipment company wouldn’t prefer to broaden its business capabilities across multiple imaging modalities. For Digitec, the reason for sticking with a single specialty is quite simple: it allows the company to stay focused on what it does best and continue to build upon its core competencies. Put simply, it’s an uncommon focus, which makes for an uncommon company.

“Keeping a single focus has always been our vision, and we don’t want to deviate from that,” said Digitec President James McGinty. “We would much rather be the very best we can be in one specialty than settle for being anything less than excellent across multiple modalities. Mammography can save lives and we’re proud to have the technical and service expertise and integrity to offer the very best quality and selection in the after-market breast imaging equipment segment. Being experts in mammography is what sets us apart.”

Of course, there are other reasons behind Digitec’s success. Here Charles Weaving, Vice President of Operations for Digitec, opens up about what makes the company a stand-out player in a sea of medical imaging equipment providers, how Digitec is more committed than ever to providing customers with the best selection, quality and value in mammography equipment, and why the company – celebrating its Silver Anniversary in 2008 – is paving the way for a golden future.

Q:This is Digitec’s 25th year in business. What has been the key to your success?

A: I don’t believe any one person or thing is the key to our longevity. Many things and people work together to take us where we are heading today, and to build upon the foundation that’s been laid over the course of Digitec’s 25-year history. Our biggest asset is our dedicated staff and our continued decision to focus exclusively on mammography -- something that hasn’t changed since this company’s inception. While others try to be all things to all people, we excel with one specialty. Digitec is a group of wonderfully dedicated and talented people who love what they do. In one way or another, breast cancer touches all of our lives. Digitec is proud to be working to fight it.

Q:The new Digitec branding was presented this year. How has it been received.

A: Wonderfully! This new look better represents who we are – an organization that has worked hard to build a reputation as the ultimate resource for mammography parts, sales, service, and training. We have had extremely positive feedback and are pleased that our customers connect with our new look. Website traffic continues to increase, especially with our monthly engineering challenge. With the engineering challenge, people from all over the world try to solve a problem presented on the website. It has been a great deal of fun.We have much more planned for our website and will be expanding our new look, so stay tuned.

Q:It has been six months since you moved into your new facility. How has the additional space improved your operations?

A: Our new facility is of great help. Inventory levels have increased, reconditioning operations are more efficient, and day-to-day operations are a little easier for us all. We’ve added more personnel, and as we expand our processes, we will have the physical space needed to accommodate that growth – as well as growth in the future. It was a much needed move for us and we are excited and more prepared for the future than ever before.

Q:How does Digitec stay current with rapidly evolving mammography technology?

A: For Digitec, keeping pace with technology has to start with our staff. Our technical group includes electrical and mechanical engineers. We have been training in-house for many years and continue to expand our knowledge by taking advantage of other training options. Over the years, we have built a strong foundation in mammography. With our years of experience, we have a strong point from which to grow into new technology.

Q:Digital Mammography is gaining momentum. How is Digitec meeting customers’ needs in this area?

A: Many of our customers have chosen to adopt digital imaging immediately and some are going to wait a little longer, and we understand both decisions. Remember, the move to digital involves more than just acquiring the image. While most are excited about and accept the industry-wide move to digital, not everyone is ready for the changes to their workflow, integration to PACS, upfront costs, and the additional annual costs of service.

Throughout the process we have been able to help our customers in a number of ways. CR for mammography is now a possibility and many customers prefer the cost savings compared to DR. For some customers, a reconditioned digital unit is a better way to start. Others need their existing film screen systems to continue to provide high quality images. In all circumstances, Digitec is uniquely suited to assist the customer.
