A Guide to the Guidelines...
How to put AAMI to Work in Your O.R.

The new standard “Liquid Barrier Performance and Classification of Protective Apparel and Drapes Intended for Use in Healthcare Facilities” has been introduced bythe Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) to assist healthcare personnel in making decisions about the selection and use of surgical gowns, drapes and other protective apparel. While not yet adopted by the FDA, the AAMI standard specifies a consistent basis for barrier testing, classification, and ultimately product labeling that enables this more informed product selection to occur.

AAMI joins a growing list of industry associations such as AORN, JCAHO and others that have introduced new guidelines and initiatives. When users consider the plethora of surgical products from multiple vendors, choosing those that offer superior performance while reducing cost-per-procedure has become increasingly complex.

“There are many initiatives being undertaken to improve outcomes in the O.R. environment such as the implementation of the new AAMI guidelines,” said Jeff Schneider, General Manager, Surgical Products at Kimberly-Clark. “Ultimately, these AAMI Standards will help users understand the level of protection they can anticipate when selecting a product from the shelf.”

“At the shelf” selection is where AAMI provides its greatest benefit, through informative product labeling. However, when you make gown or drape purchase decisions, there are many other factors to consider, including Barrier, Flammability, Lint, Comfort and Ease-of-use. With so many choices, deciding upon the most appropriate product for your facility is not always easy. Kimberly-Clark is committed to providing education and support to help you select products that offer superior performance while lowering overall cost-per-procedure.
We invite you to use the following charts as a guide to making purchasing decisions in your facility.
