Medline Launches
QUICKSUITE Disposable
O.R. Clean
Up System
Reduces O.R. Turnover Time, Increases Revenues,
Prevents Cross Contamination
Medline Industries, Inc., recently launched
an innovative disposable clean up system
for the operating room to help facilities
turn over their O.R. suites more quickly.
Turnover time is crucial for hospitals since
operating rooms generate about 42 percent
of a typical facilitys revenue, and
adding just one additional procedure per
day per O.R. suite can produce anywhere
from $4 million to $7 million in additional
annual revenue for the average-size hospital.
Prevents Cross Contamination
Called QuickSuite, the kit contains
everything a facility needs to clean up
their O.R. suites quickly and efficiently.
Since all the products in the kit are disposable,
QuickSuite also helps prevent cross contamination.
Additionally, many of the products in the
kit are impervious such as the table sheet,
armboard and headboard covers to help prevent
blood and body fluids from coming into contact
with the O.R. table.
"QuickSuite will help a facility turnover
its O.R. suites more quickly, which will
enable it to add more procedures and increase
its revenues," said Christine Weber,
Product Manager for Dynacor, Medlines
manufacturing division. "Equally important,
since all of the products in the kit are
disposable, none of the products used in
the kit will be re-introduced into the O.R,
helping to reduce the likelihood of infection."
The Baptist Health System, a six-hospital
system in Birmingham, Ala., is using QuickSuite
in all of its 60 O.R. suites.
"With QuickSuite, everything is in
one pack, which eliminates the labor and
associated costs of pulling each product,"said
Jan Howell, O.R. Manager for Baptist Princeton
Hospital ."We were also able to customize
the QuickSuite kit for each of our facilities
which reduces our costs because we can standardize
the kit across the entire system."
"Lint-Free" Poly Mop Head
Another key benefit of QuickSuite is that
it is available with a lint-free
poly mop head. This is important for infection
control efforts as traditional mops leave
lint behind on the floor which may harbor
dangerous bacteria. As it dries, the lint
can become airborne and potentially contaminate
sterile fields which could lead to infection.
Since QuickSuite is a self-contained kit,
it will also help streamline a facilitys
cleaning procedure as healthcare workers
do not have to pull a multitude of separate
products from the storeroom shelves prior
to clean up. QuickSuite is available in
a standard kit or it can be customized to
a facilitys specific requirements.
Components in the QuickSuite include:

Fluid Management Products
Save Time and Reduce Risk of Fluid Exposure
Todays operating room environment
is equipped with high tech devices with
price tags to match. There are many individuals
present during most typical procedures,
each with a specific role. Nevertheless,
one of the most perplexing issues facing
O.R. directors today is the same one facing
them dozens of years ago. How do I protect
the safety of my staff and the integrity
of my equipment during high fluid volume
cases where liters of solution may find
its way to the floor? Additionally, in those
same procedures, clinicians often must deal
with fluid collection via multiple suction
canisters that, in turn, require excessive
handling time. Time better spent on patient
care.
In an effort to address OR fluid management,
Medline has teamed up with H2Or to manufacture
and market a line of fluid management devices.
These products are uniquely designed to
collect excessive fluid, protect the clinician
from exposure to such fluids and expedite
OR clean-up time.
The Jumbo Jug
Foremost in the offering is Medlines
Jumbo Jug. This large capacity (13,000 ml)
suction canister saves surgical time by
eliminating the need for frequent canister
changes when irrigation fluid is abundant.
The simple design makes it easy to carry
or transport in a standard kick bucket stand,
while the integrated handle reduces the
risk of fluid contact and makes pouring
simple and efficient.
Tony Colyer, Director of Purchasing for
Rush Presbyterian St. Luke Surgi-Center
in Chicago, uses the Jumbo Jug particularly
with gravity irrigation systems.
"We have been using the Jumbo Jug for
over a year and find it is 100 times better
than other similar products on the market,
such as Omni-Jug,"said Colyer. "I
really like the Jumbo Jug because it is
sturdier and reduces the risk of exposure.
I also like the integrated handle which
makes it much easier to pick up and use."
Debbie McDonald, RN and Orthopedic Team
Leader at Muskogee Regional Medical Center
in Muskogee, OK, also is a major proponent
of the Jumbo Jug because it allows her and
her staff to concentrate on the patient.
"We started using the Jumbo Jug for
our orthopedic and general procedures involving
large volumes of irrigation,"said McDonald.
"The large capacity of the Jumbo Jug
allows our nurses to focus on the patient
instead of changing canisters."
Kathy Helberg, RN, BSN, Director of Ambulatory
Surgery with Ambulatory Surgery Associates,
Tulsa, OK agrees that Jumbo Jug is a real
time saver. "The Jumbo Jug is a great
invention,"she said. "It frees
up the circulator to perform other tasks
instead of continuously changing the small
canisters."
"We could not be more pleased to partner
with H2Or in this endeavor,"says Dan
Robertson, Product Manager for Medlines
Dynacor Division. "Combined with our
fluid solidifier product offering that includes
SafeSorb and LTS Plus® we are
now positioned to address almost any concern
our O.R. customer base may have related
to fluid management."
The PowerWick XL
Complimenting Jumbo Jug are products designed
to remove, or absorb, fluid from the OR
floor. Positioned anywhere fluids are likely
to collect on the floor, the PowerWick XL
aspirator is especially good for procedures
requiring an abundant amount of irrigation
fluid. It is a low-profile design that can
be flexed into any position for maximum
absorption. It is quiet and has a tremendous
vacuum force to pull in unlimited amounts
of fluid in just seconds. The PowerWick
XL connects to any O.R. wall suction by
way of the Jumbo Jug or smaller volume canister.
Other fluid collection products include
absorbent pads called King Pad and Rescue
Roll which act like big absorbent paper
towels.
"The RescueRoll is a great safety tool.
It not only soaks up blood and bio-hazards
but also reduces slips and falls in the
operating room," said James Roundtree,
RN, OR Supervisor for Bartlesville Surgery
Center in Bartlesville, OK. "We have
been using the Rescue Roll and Jumbo Jugs
for several months. These two products have
cut out turnover time in half on arthroscopy
cases."
